About Rye

Rye is a highly affluent city, located on Long Island Sound, in the eastern part of Central Westchester County. Rye has two miles of coastline along the Long Island Sound which includes its own beaches and the Rye Harbor. The city is located approximately 25 miles north of Manhattan, approximately 10 miles south of Greenwich, CT and 5 miles southeast of White Plains, NY.

Rye shares with Connecticut, a small-town New England feel with a unique blending of old and new. Rye retains its traditional atmosphere of tranquil village life embracing many of its historic landmarks that bind the city to its 300 year history.

The city's residential areas are separated by numerous open spaces, bodies of water, wetland and marshes, with interesting topography and convenient to major road ways. Thoughtful town planning and controlled growth ensures the town's goal to retain residential character and historic fabric.

Purchase Street (where the Highlands is located) is lined with a collection of gourmet shops, coffee bars, banks, restaurants and many elegant boutiques.

Population

The city of Rye is one of the most affluent communities in New York State and the nation. Rye's easy 37-minute train commute to New York City (where most of Rye's residents are employed) has has made it a premier suburban community for middle-and-upper-income earners.

Schools

Rye has three public elementary schools, The Osborne School, The Milton School and The Midland School. All three schools have been recognized by New York State as Schools of Excellence and by the Nation as Blue Ribbon Schools of Excellence. The Rye Middle School is also recognized by the Nation as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. Rye High School has approximately 700 students and offers a rigorous program of 145 courses including Advanced Placement and honor courses. It has an extremely low student-to-teacher ratio and 94% of the 700 students that graduate from Rye High School go on to attend some of the nation's most prestigious colleges and universities.

Rye Country Day School is a private college prepatory school. It offers schooling to children from Pre-K to High School. It has an extensive variety of honor classes, languages, sports, drama and fine art classes to offer. School of the Holy Child is an all women's private school for middle school and high school levels. Resurrection School and St. Catherine of Genoa Grammar are both private elementary schools in Rye.

Parks and Recreation

The Rye Historical Society owns and maintains several antique homes and taverns that are now used as museums including the John Jay Historical Center. In addition, Rye also has two parks for the city residents to enjoy. Crawford Park contains soccer fields, a pavilion area, softball field, open fields, a playground and the mansion. Oakland Beach is located along Forest Avenue in the City of Rye and contains grasslands, forests, open fields, duck pond and a beach.

As a Rye resident, you are able to enjoy Rye's town beach and parks. There are five prestigious golf clubs including Apawamis Golf Club and the Westchester Country Club. The Rye Golf Club offers the Whitby Castle, a fine dining restaurant overlooking the Long Sound. Rye is home to the Nature Center which includes 46 acres of plush land, nature trails, a bird sanctuary and museum. Rye also has a brand new YMCA, the Shongut Marina, Arts Center, The Rye Free Reading Room and The Durland Scout Center.
